The Advantage of Pneumatic (Air) Motors

Pneumatic motors, or air motors as they are commonly referred to, are motors that work off compressed air.  They convert the compressed air to mechanical work through rotary motion.

These motors offer several advantages over electric motors; they offer a greater power density, offer variable speed without a speed controller, generate less heat, and can be used in mor voatile atmospheres since they do not require electric power.

Operating much like a windmill, pneuamatic motors use compressed air to exert pressure against its vanes, causing the rotor to turn at high speed.  Rotational speeds can vary between 100 and 2,000 rpm, depending on the air pressure.

Though available in dry-running designs, most air motors require a small amount of lubrication.  This is most commonly provided with a filter, regulator and lubricator set up in which the filter cleans the air, the lubricator introduces a small amount of oil to the air line, and the regulator is used to adjust the air pressure and control the motor speed.

Sharpe Mixers stocks a large inventory of air 1.5 hp air motors and FLR (filter, regulator, lubricator) assemblies for immediate shipment.  You may purchase these 24/7 from our online store!
